Air-activated hand warmers
Air-activated hand warmers are the most common type of hand warmers. They work by using a metal disk that, when exposed to air, starts a chemical reaction that creates heat. These hand warmers usually last for around six hours.
Gel hand warmers
Gel hand warmers work in a similar way to air-activated hand warmers, but they use a gel-like substance as the heat source. This type of hand warmer is slower to heat up but can generate heat for up to 12 hours.
Heat pack hand warmers
Heat pack hand warmers use a small metal disk to generate heat, which is then transferred to a pack made from cloth or fleece. This type of handwarmer is the slowest to heat up but can provide heat for up to 24 hours.
A supersaturated solution occurs when there is more solute than can be dissolved in a solvent at a given temperature. In other words, it's a solution that has been forced to its maximum concentration.
One way to create a supersaturated solution is to heat the solvent until the maximum amount of solute can be dissolved. At this point, the solution will be supersaturated and any additional solute will form crystals. This is how most hand warmers work—by heating a water and ammonium nitrate mixture to create a supersaturated solution. When the hand warmer is activated, it warms the solution and the crystals dissolve, providing heat for your hands.

Air-activated hand warmers usually contain cellulose, iron filings, activated carbon, vermiculite, and salt. When exposed to the air, heat is generated due to the oxidation of the iron filings.
The supersaturated solution style works differently. It’s made by adding sodium acetate to cold water beyond the level which can not be dissolved. When the hand warmer is heated, it allows the extra sodium acetate to dissolve into the water and crystallize. Then when the metal disc is bent, tiny particles of metal are released, which creates a chemical reaction that releases the stored heat energy from the solution.

Some complex versions of these hand warmers possess different levels of heat. And in general, battery-powered hand warmers last for several hours per charge.
